3 Cruelty Free Products That Rock & 1 Dud

Let’s talk personal hygiene products!—specifically cruelty free products. Who doesn’t love a great selection of great cruelty free products that work?! I certainly do.

Reviews of cleansers & deodorants - oh my!! //Kaleidoscopes & Polka Dots

Let’s begin with deodorants

When it comes to deodorant, I don’t think I’m very picky. The main thing that I ask is that I not notice it—all that much. With that said, I don’t mind a subtle scent of baby powder or cucumber or wild flower—but when these are substantial they quickly get placed in the “I hope to use later for the sake of not wasting money but probably will end up throwing away” pile of products. The lack of stickiness and longevity are two other facets that are really important to me. (I mean seriously, the last thing you need is a set of arm pits that stick only to reveal a strong scent.) The clear gel type deodorants generally have these features hence I stay away—give me a solid please!

Tom’s wild lavender long lasting deodorant recently made its way to my pile of misfit products. I picked it up months ago and had high hopes for it. It is made of no artificial fragrance or preservatives, has no aluminum (which as it happens, isn’t directly linked to a cause of cancer as I was previously convinced of) and is cruelty free. On paper it’s seems perfect but upon application all of the facets that don’t really hold up to my standards apply. It is sticky and quite fragrant. I am constantly reminded of its presence when I wear it and it isn’t pleasant. All-in-all I would rate this product a two out of five stars. I added an extra star for effort.

Meow Meow Tweet lavender deodorant cream, on the other hand, is perfect in every way except, its packaging and maybe it’s $14 price tag. I received a deluxe sample from my Petit Vour subscription a while ago and I loved the effect, scent and feel of the product but as it is whipped into a jar applying it is quite messy. (I reviewed this and other products from Petit Vour in a video previously. If you’re in the market for a new beauty subscription box then I definitely recommend this one.) While this product is lasting, it isn’t the product I’d use for a cardio heavy workout because it isn’t the strongest formula. Yes, another slight flaw. I still recommend it because it is a lovely cruelty free product that does the job on an average day. I rate this product four out of five stares because it is effective and pleasant—just not potent.

Next - Facial Cleansers

When it comes to facial cleansers I am picky as I have combination acne prone skin and tend to gravitate towards oilier more so than normal or dry.

I really enjoy the process of cleansing in the evening. I love the feeling of stripping my skin of makeup with an oil cleanser, cleansing again with a thicker cleanser in conjunction to the Olay Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System, and finally rehydrating with a combination of oils. The process almost liberating, while tedious.

Earlier this year I discovered Alba Botanica good & clean daily detox foaming cleanser for sensitive skin. It is an oil clearing cream and it is really great when used with the Olay brush system as it is nice and thick. I’ve used the brush system with various cleansers and when they’ve been on the thinner side the brush feels a bit harsh. With this cream cleanser my skin feels protected, cleaner and moisturized.

This cleanser is also free of artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, parabens, it is hypo allergenic and just wonderful at working its cleansing magic. I highly recommend it—five out of five stars from me and at $8.99 per bottle it’s a total hit as a night time cleanser!

In the morning I don’t use the Olay system. I also use a milder, more fluid cleanser. A product that meets my requirements is Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal hydrating cleansing milk. This product is very hydrating. At first, it seemed to leave behind a film of oil. I now realize that it is part of the products hydrating properties. As noted on the bottle, it is an antioxidant-intensive, soap-free cleanser that softens, soothes and provides photo-age defense.  It’s really lovely and affordable—four out of five stars for me.

Have you tried any of these products or do you have any cruelty free recommendations?
